bank foreclosure

A few years ago, the Internet experienced a video revolution. As broadband access expanded and more people began uploading content, video became an expected resource for consumers. Businesses could get more mileage out of television commercials and engage users by linking to video reviews of its products.

A year ago, we saw evidence of small and medium-sized business increasing budgets for video content – to be used both on their homepages and in advertisements. In 2009, 19% of businesses polled were using video (up from 5% in 2008) and I’m willing to bet that number will be much higher in the 2010 report that should come out later this month.

Now, as technology has become more affordable and increasingly mobile, we’re able to experience virtually anything online. As such, local search engines are evolving into master content synthesizers to meet the needs of consumers and advertisers alike – offering video and photos, local advertising deals, user reviews, QR codes, maps and directions, etc.

Consumer expectations of local search engines have never been higher. Users want to see photo and video reviews of a company’s products, read what other people have to say, and even take a virtual tour of your store or restaurant before they visit.

The same is true of small- and medium-sized business owners looking to find a competitive advantage. Local search engines are offering more dynamic content than ever before to users and it’s up to search marketers to help business owners feed that content.

It’s interesting to see how video content has changed since the advent of YouTube. Instead of traditional video advertising, we’re seeing new technology that lets users look around your business from their own home. Soon, we’ll be able to find virtual creations of almost any environment online – and those virtual tours are being integrated with current deals and other advertising promotions to drive traffic to your business.

Recently, a company called EveryScape partnered with Bing and YP to offer digital advertisers a new local search solution – virtual tours. For example, YP360 will let a user step inside a restaurant in Baltimore while they’re still on the train. They can choose a place and even set a reservation, all within the same application on their phone.

Google Earth has gone indoors and local search engines are responsible for bringing this detailed and vivid content to users while keeping it simple and accessible. And the business case for offering this new content to users and advertisers alike is clear as local advertising is expected to grow to $16.1 billion this year, up from $13.7 billion in 2010.

Even more, mobile phone advertising spending is expected to be more than a billion dollars in 2011, up 48% from 2010. Local search engines like YP and Yelp! are seeing over 20 million visitors a month, many of them accessing via mobile phones.

This is a great opportunity for local search engines and advertisers to embrace this new technology and get ahead of the pack. Effective local advertising goes beyond building a social networking presence and listing in directories – you have to make sure your content is engaging. In the online world, the savviest local search marketers who use this technology well will have the most successful campaigns.

I recommend that any business owner or local search marketer read up on the latest digital advertising solutions and consider offering your customers virtual tours of your products or store. To set your business apart, you need to stay current with the best that local search has to offer.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

It looks like women have caught up with men in numbers in the workplace. For the first time in history, women in the USA now outnumber men in the workforce, and there are now more women in supervisory positions than there are males. The question is whether they will handle the downside of working any better than men.

According to an article by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., titled The 21st Century Workplace -- Are Women the New Men?, the economic downturn has hit men harder. They held nearly 80 percent of jobs that have been lost during what is now being called the "mancession." Will women now inherit the stress, pressure, exhaustion, burn out and heart attacks commonly associated with male leaders in business?

Some predict that this new female-dominated workplace will mean a softening of the corporate culture, with more benevolent leaders. Others foresee just the opposite. Ella says many women don't want to be seen as "soft" -- and others simply aren't. No one would call Carly Fiorina, the head of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005, a wilting lily. According to her memoir, Tough Choices, she was sometimes referred to as Chainsaw Carly.

All of this is especially relevant on the entrepreneurial side, since statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of their male counterparts. Some would argue that the growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful, and better able to succeed, despite the odds.

While I'm sure we will continue to see progress on the female side, I predict that they will struggle with the same major challenges faced today by men. These include:

  1. Funding your dream. Raising money is hard, whether you are counting on friends, investors, or banks. I rarely see women at angel investment groups, either asking for money, or offering to fund new ventures. Men seem more focused on this one.

  2. Need for increased confidence and mindset skills. Many women and men are paralyzed by perfection, plagued by pessimism, and the need to satisfy others, rather than themselves. We need more women leaders.

  3. Motivation to succeed. Every entrepreneur needs to love what they do, and believe so strongly in their product or service that they can weather the tough times. On this one, it's easy to spot the ones with passion, from either gender.

  4. Manage time and priorities. Women, often more than men, try to do too much. It's hard to balance the continual demands of the business, personal relationships, and home life. Every entrepreneur needs to prioritize the important tasks ahead of urgent tasks.

  5. Never stop learning. After you start your business, the learning really begins. True entrepreneurs look at failures as their best learning experiences. Networking, and using your network is the next most important element of learning.

I don't see any challenges which are so gender specific that they can't be overcome by any entrepreneur. Yet I don't think women should be convinced that the battle for equality is almost over. There is still the question of why there are so few women in high places, and why the average income for women in business is about 68% of men's income.

What I am hoping is that women will not just be the new men, and suffer from the same maladies and limitations. I'll be looking for women to create the "new business culture" that every worker wants -- better role definitions, more effective and productive leadership, and better work-life balance. That would make women entrepreneurs the new women, rather than the new men!

Making Easy Money

This is actually a good piece, but a wee bit preachy. But still good.

Anyone complaining about eBay and PayPal fees, please just be quiet. If you are running a home business where you sell things that don't take up too much space or is a hassle, then the fees are trivial compared to the profit in many cases. You think that when you pay $10 for something at a store, 100% of that $10 go to the owner? After rent, salary and even credit card fees real world business often deal with HIGHER fees than someone dealing with PayPal.

But I do agree 100% with his buy something and sell it just to even break even to experiment. That is the BEST way to learn how to sell something and is very little risk.

I got into eBay selling the usual way by selling off things I knew were valuable and could turn a profit. After a while I started to sell off stuff I had but didn't want anymore on eBay; I consider it an endless yard sale. Many times I made back my initial investment or lost money, but after 10+ years of doing this on eBay I started to understand what sold and what I was good at selling.

Then I started to sell Mac upgrades for folks who were tweaking their machines back in the early 2000. For those who don't know, Apple placed an "Apple tax" on many off-the-shelf PC components that either just had an Apple sticker or need a ROM flashing. So I would buy boxes of components, flash them or simply write an eBay explanation as to the item being tested on a Mac and soon enough I was making $20 to $80 profit for a good year or so until Apple basically obsolete the G4 machines. In the case of items that simply cost more as Apple branded I wrote a description that explains what the item was, how it was tested and how my feedback and tech expertise assures that the item will work. Anyone had the choice of buying the pure PC component, but they bought from me for a modest markup to save the hassle. I even had a few people give me PayPal "tips" for advice I provided. It was then I realized I set up a small tech store with loss leaders and consulting! I could not quit my day job on that money, but it helped me through some rough times.

Now I mainly sell old collectible toys from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. I got into it when I started to sell off some of my old childhood toys, realized there was a profit in my childhood investment so I translated my passion and knowledge into buying collectible toys in bulk in the U.S. and Japan, cleaning up and assessing them and then selling them on eBay. Buy a huge lot of toys from a seller who doesn't want to deal with the headache, break it up, ID the parts and assess it, and then I am selling items that cost me about $2 a piece for around $10 a piece. Again, not enough to live on, but a very nice source of extra income.

Also, if you sell online, be prepared to ship. Some sellers never think of packing until after the sale. BAD MOVE! You might end up paying more in packing materials or delaying shipment while you hunt for boxes and screw up your sales transaction. I only sell items online I am 100% positive I can ship. And with that in mind, I have moved over to buying small collectible items in bulk I know I can stick in a padded envelope and ship. The weight assures first class shipping which is less than Priority Mail, but gets there as quickly in many cases. And the light weight makes it easier to carry.

Also, if you know you will ship items—like books and CDs—in bulk, buy a box of mailers from an online seller. It will end up costing you 25 cents per envelope which you might penny-pinch over, but it is a lot less than buying individual envelopes from the Post Office or drug store. And you have them on hand so it saves time.

I would also recommend investing in a small scale and even a nice label printer. The scale will help you give your customers a better estimate of cost and the printed labels will assure that the address is clear/legible on the package so it goes through the system correctly. Labels can be bought in bulk for thermal printers for tons less than local stores, and are just as good.

Oh, as far as shipping goes, my eBay shipping & handling rates are incredibly reasonable and always less than others but guess what? Buyers ALWAYS complain or have second thoughts on shipping & handling charges. ALWAYS! I charged someone $2 for shipping and they complained that shipping was $1.95. Don't worry about shipping other than the tips I give above, because ultimately nobody wants to pay for shipping and everyone complains. You'll never make them happy so don't sweat it.

Also Craigslist... Oy vey... I mainly sell items on there that weight too much or are too bulky to ship. And it works well somewhat. But folks on Craigslist want bargains and are lazy when picking up. Not worth the effort.

Phew! I just wrote that.

Making Things Worse

by digby

Who could have ever imagined that electing a criminal tea partier to the highest office in the state would cause problems?

Rick Scott, the conservative Republican billionaire who plucked the governor’s job from the party establishment in November with $73 million of his own money and the backing of the Tea Party, vowed during his campaign to run the troubled state like a corporate chief executive (which he was) and not a politician (which he proudly says he is not).

And now it has become a problem, some of his fellow Republicans say.

“The governor doesn’t understand there is a State Constitution and that we have three branches of government,” said State Senator Mike Fasano, a Republican from New Port Richey who upset Mr. Scott with rough handling of his staff during a testy committee hearing. “They are talking about the attitude that he is still the C.E.O. of his former health care corporation, and that is not going to work in this state, in Tallahassee, in my district. The people believe in three branches of government.”

Republican lawmakers in Florida were hoping for a smoother transition. Instead, they say, they got top-down management from a political novice.

With the Legislature convening on Tuesday for a potentially arduous two-month session that is bound to usher in major cuts in spending and jobs and radical changes to education, pensions, unemployment benefits and Medicaid, the governor will be tested on a broader, more public scale. Florida faces an estimated $3.6 billion budget shortfall this year and has a stubborn 12 percent unemployment rate.

“I think there have been some understandable growing pains because government doesn’t function like a corporation,” said Speaker Dean Cannon, a Republican from central Florida, taking a more measured tone than Mr. Fasano.

Read the whole article. Basically, he believes that he is now a monarch and can do anything he wants without any input from the other electe4d leaders. And here's a little taste of what he plans to do:

Mr. Scott is single-minded in his plans to shake up Florida and create jobs. He wants to create a business-friendly environment, chop up the bureaucracy, peel away regulations and hand out $1.7 billion in tax cuts for corporations and property owners in the first year of his budget. Privatizing Medicaid and prisons is also high on the agenda.

In his budget proposal, Mr. Scott is seeking to eliminate more than 8,500 state jobs, including in the Corrections and Health Departments. His budget for the state’s already lean public schools is $1.75 billion less than this year’s, mostly because federal stimulus money dried up.

And he wants to cut costs in Florida’s pension fund by requiring more than 600,000 government workers, including police officers, teachers, firefighters, judges and retirees, to contribute 5 percent to their retirement. New employees would use plans similar to a 401(k). This has angered state workers, who have gone without a general raise since 2006. They plan large demonstrations around Florida on Tuesday.

Maybe this is what Floridians wanted, but I doubt it. On the other hand, it's what they should have expected. Rick Scott may be the looniest, most dishonest, powerful elected official in the country. And it was easy to see that going in. Stay tuned.

What to anticipate Whenever Getting a Roofer

When the time comes to repair or even substitute your homes roof, it can be a challenging task to locate somebody that is qualified to do the job. There are many roofers available, but the types who'll perform a great job for a reasonable price are not frequently easy to find. If you're in the market for the contractor, use the ideas below for interviewing and hiring the correct one.

Interview as well as Consultation

Interview on Talkurbex by [Dystop]

Most roofers offer totally free consultation services. This is especially essential, because it gives them a chance to evaluate exactly what your homes roof requirements, and it gives you an opportunity to evaluate them. As with all businesses, believe in instincts about the people a person allow upward onto your roofing. No issue exactly how good a contractor's status or suggestion, he or she should start by presenting a person with a business greeting card. If the service provider arrives searching and speaking in an unprofessional method, most likely the job he is going to do will also be less than professional. This isn't to say that you ought to anticipate companies to arrive in fits. They is going to be climbing in your roofing, therefore most will be dressed in denim jeans and work boots or sneakers. If the service provider appears to be more interested in talking upon their mobile phone during your roof than he's within analyzing your roof's requirements, that may be an additional indication that he is not the main one to do the job. For your legal safety, make sure that the service provider has sufficient legal responsibility insurance.

Roof Assessment

Expect the service provider will be going up on your roof. Actually, any contractor who not need to go up on your roofing to evaluate the issue ought to be immediately discounted. Those who are serious about their own work may possibly make a sketching of your roof's surface area and mark problem areas on it because they undergo their own evaluation, or even they'll take pictures or even video from the surface while they are available online for. This is a very essential action, because it enables you to observe exactly what the problems are and know how they'll be fixed.

Estimation

Green Roofs by Val Ann

The next step would be the created estimate. The contractor will require out their calculator and are available up with a written estimation. Some companies will go out to their vehicle or van as well as write up the actual suggestion, while others will crunch the numbers for the job prior to you. Once you're because of the suggestion, make sure that you understand which items will be utilized, how long the job will require and if there are any additional or even concealed expenses that may occur throughout the repair from the roof. The contractor should be able to answer many of these concerns effortlessly and forewarn you associated with a additional expenses that could be sustained if the roof's ethics be damaged inside.

After you have received a few created estimations from roofing companies, assess what every organization or contractor would like to provide for the cost. Do not always low cost the highest bid, simply because occasionally the highest bid will actually be the contractor who does the job properly. Additionally, be skeptical associated with prices for bids which are significantly less than others. They may be utilizing substandard items or be unethical concerning the chance of hidden costs. Most importantly, trust your intuition as well as go with the contractor that makes you feel most comfortable about giving over your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and the Uyghur

through henry on Dec 20, This year
Henryk Szadziewski, Manager, Uyghur Human Rights Project

If it were ever uncertain, info obtained by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese federal government worries over its continued charge of the location it phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out wires through Ough.S. diplomats demonstrate the actual degree to which Chinese language authorities make an effort to convince governments globally to adopt its stance on issues impacting Uyghurs. The cables also show the United States' issues and views concerning the ongoing repressive measures in the area.

uyghur by sarvaz

The majority of lighting associated with Chinese government stress are the cables pointing to Chinese frustration, or even the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to third nations. A December 29, 08 cable applies exactly how Chinese language Assistant International Minister Liu Jieyi met using the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to China in order to tone of voice Beijing's powerful opposition of release to any country other than The far east, and that if the Ough.Utes. do certainly accede for this request it might "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and to co-operation ‘in essential areas'". In addition, the Feb 2009 cable television describes how the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfavorable act towards us" along with a "slap within the face". The U.S. government was company in not really releasing the detainees in order to China illustrates the degree from the politicized nature from the Chinese language judicial system. Legitimate concerns more than terrorism are easy to understand, but in the Ough.S. government's view the detainees might probably encounter do-it-yourself torture as well as execution if they returned to The far east

Chinese language government stress in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only applied to the Ough.Utes. government, but also in order to New Zealand along with a number of European government authorities that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Germany as well as Finland, in addition to Eu member states all appear to have paid for the brunt associated with Chinese language government disappointment. Regarding Indonesia, which was at first willing to consider 2 Uyghurs on solely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases had been much less better than other detainees because of the negative effects taking Uyghurs might have on relationships with China. The May Eight, '09 cable applies how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Indonesia experienced informed The far east of the Ough.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo coupled with been consequently cautioned through China of ‘a heavy load upon bilateral relations' if Indonesia had been to simply accept any kind of detainees".

The actual diplomatic wires also talk about the actual unrest within Urumchi, the actual local capital, in This summer 2009. A This summer Thirteen, '09 cable discussing bulk incidents in The far east says:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 as well as in Tibet in 03 of 08 vary markedly within source and nature through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both existing serious trouble for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Celebration leadership wouldn't wait to open fire on Uighurs or even Tibetans when they considered this essential to restore purchase. Bulk incidents present a different type of threat, he said, since the management is ‘afraid' to fire upon Han rioters with regard to fear of sparking huge public outrage that will turn against the Party."

This is a relaxing opinion, especially when one considers the evidence offered by 50 percent reviews launched this year by the Uyghur Individual Rights Project (UHRP) and Amnesty Worldwide which detail eyewitness accounts of the utilization of deadly reside fire against Uyghur protestors in This summer '09. Additionally, the actual observation that fireplace would not be used towards Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for that different strategy taken by Chinese protection forces within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese protests in September 2009. During individuals direct orders, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, who had demanded he inform them about federal government responses to security concerns. An identical request to satisfy using the Party Secretary through Uyghur protesters in This summer wasn't fulfilled.

The actual broader consequences from the unrest also saw a short discussion about the impact it would have upon Iran-China relationships, and on relations with Sydney after Globe Uyghur Our elected representatives Leader, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked in the Nationwide Push Club in Canberra within July 2009. Within the second option case, china government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian bank which vendors the National Press Membership to use its impact to bar the Kadeer speech there".

The U . s . States' concerns concerning the situation in the Uyghur region also come through in the cables. Inside a discussion upon plan direction within Tibet, Ough.S. officials explain that it will end up being not possible with regard to Chinese leaders to adopt a much softer collection "if they appear like they are doing this below worldwide pressure". The cable dated 04 16, 2008, 30 days following the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan areas, also relayed the declaration "that household stability remains the leadership's top priority above all else, meaning there will ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no relaxation of the current hard line on Tibet or perhaps in places like Xinjiang." The information contained in the cable additionally storage sheds gentle about the severe level of sensitivity with which the Chinese federal government sights territorial ethics, and the feasible spill more than of unrest from Tibet.

The chance of methods to tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of municipal culture tend to be discussed in a Feb 24, 2008 cable. While recommending which China's economic achievement increases its resistance to democratic change, the cable television also discusses exactly how Chinese frontrunners see the usefulness associated with "a limited expansion of civil culture, including improvements within the guideline associated with regulation along with a more powerful part for authorized religions, NGOs, non profit organizations and other actors within areas that contribute to social stability and don't problem Communist Celebration guideline." This can be a significant change in thinking, that has observed U.S. officials market the idea that Chinese economic development, and economic relations along with China brings in regards to a progressively democratic culture; however, much more belief appears to be placed in a grassroots movement than one that starts from the top levels of the Chinese federal government. Nonetheless, the cable television proves that "[i]n areas for example Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism results in tight restrictions about the development of municipal culture." This method is viewed as counter-productive by the recognized, who shows that the actual Ough.S. government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual privileges report and appeal to China's growing awareness which greater respect for individual privileges, religious freedom and the guideline of law assists to promote the development as well as sociable stability which The far east looks for as well as to enhance China's worldwide picture." Such a strategy might consider considerable diplomatic skills considering "China's weird fear the Usa secretly promotes routine change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual wires offer insight into the actual daily business of diplomacy that's hardly ever owned by the general public, which is fascinating to note the amount of function done nowadays on Uyghur problems. The importance of the actual role of the United States like a monitor associated with Uyghur individual privileges problems within private discussions is made clear, as well as contrasts with its sensible public position. Employees of the Uyghur Human Privileges Task is comfortable with pressure the Chinese federal government puts upon Uyghur activists; still, the facts of Chinese government stress upon its counterparts is illustrative from the diploma which Chinese language officials make an effort to suppress contradictory stories. With more facts in the future through Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the head lines, however the cables have get rid of brand new gentle about the documentation associated with individual rights conditions in the Uyghur region.

If it were actually in doubt, info acquired by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, offers verified Chinese federal government worries more than it's continued charge of the location this phone calls Xinjiang, also is known as Eastern Turkestan. The leaked out wires through U.Utes. diplomats demonstrate the actual extent that Chinese government bodies make an effort to persuade government authorities worldwide to consider it's position on problems affecting Uyghurs. The actual cables additionally display the actual U . s . States' issues as well as views concerning the on going repressive steps in the region.

Most illuminating associated with Chinese government stress are the cables pointing to Chinese language anger, or the specter associated with Chinese ire, within the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd nations. A Dec Twenty nine, 2008 cable television applies exactly how Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.S. Ambassador to The far east to voice Beijing's powerful competitors associated with release to any kind of country other than China, and that if the Ough.Utes. do indeed accede for this request it would "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and to co-operation ‘in essential areas'". Furthermore, the February 2009 cable explains the way the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the possible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfavorable act towards us" along with a "slap within the face". That the U.Utes. government stood company in not liberating the detainees in order to The far east demonstrates the actual degree from the politicized nature of the Chinese language judicial program. Genuine concerns more than terrorism tend to be easy to understand, however in the actual U.S. government's observe the detainees might most likely face do-it-yourself torture as well as execution if they returned to The far east

Chinese language federal government stress regarding the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't just applied to the U.S. federal government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand along with a handful of Western government authorities that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, in addition to European Union member says just about all appear to have borne the actual impact associated with Chinese federal government unhappiness. In the case of Germany, which was initially willing to consider 2 Uyghurs upon purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been much less better than other detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs would have upon relationships along with China. The May Eight, 2009 cable applies exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported which Indonesia experienced informed The far east of the U.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo coupled with been consequently cautioned by China of ‘a large burden on bilateral relations' if Germany had been to simply accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables also talk about the unrest in Urumchi, the local capital, in July '09. The July 13, '09 cable talking about bulk occurrences within China says:

"Ethnic riots like those who work in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet in March associated with 08 vary substantially within source and character through bulk occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both existing severe trouble for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, however the Celebration management would not wait to spread out fireplace upon Uighurs or Tibetans when they deemed it necessary to recover order. Bulk occurrences present a different type of risk, he explained, as the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters for fear of causing massive public outrage that will change from the Celebration."

This is a chilling opinion, especially when one views the evidence offered by 50 percent reports launched this season by the Uyghur Human Rights Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide which detail eyewitness company accounts from the utilization of deadly live fire towards Uyghur protestors in This summer '09. Additionally, the observation which fire would not be deployed towards Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for the different approach used through Chinese language protection forces in Urumchi to Han Chinese direct orders in September 2009. Throughout individuals direct orders, then Party Assistant, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, that experienced demanded that he let them know about federal government responses in order to protection issues. An identical ask for to meet using the Party Assistant through Uyghur demonstrators in July wasn't fulfilled.

The broader repercussions of the unrest also noticed a short dialogue about the impact it would possess on Iran-China relations, and on relations with Sydney after World Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the National Press Club in Canberra in August 2009. In the second option case, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Australian bank that sponsors the nation's Push Club to make use of it's impact to bar the Kadeer talk there".

The U . s . States' issues concerning the situation within the Uyghur region also come through within the cables. Inside a dialogue upon plan direction within Tibet, Ough.S. authorities explain that it will end up being impossible for Chinese language leaders to adopt a much softer line "if they appear like they are doing this below international pressure". The cable dated April 16, 2008, 30 days after the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan areas, also relayed the actual observation "that domestic balance remains the leadership's main concern most of all, meaning there'll ‘almost surely' be no rest of the present hard collection on Tibet or perhaps in places such as Xinjiang." The info contained in the cable also sheds light about the extreme level of sensitivity that the Chinese government sights territorial ethics, and also the feasible drip over associated with unrest from Tibet.

The prospect of solutions to stress within Tibet as well as Xinjiang as a result of civil culture tend to be discussed in a Feb 24, 08 cable television. While recommending which China's financial success will increase it's resistance to democratic reform, the actual cable additionally talks about exactly how Chinese leaders begin to see the usefulness associated with "a restricted growth of civil culture, such as improvements in the rule of law along with a more powerful part with regard to authorized beliefs, NGOs, charities along with other stars in areas which bring about sociable stability and do not problem Communist Party guideline." This is a significant alternation in considering, which has seen Ough.Utes. authorities market the notion that Chinese financial development, and economic relations with The far east will bring about a progressively democratic culture; nevertheless, more faith seems to be put into a grassroots movement compared to one which starts in the top levels of the Chinese government. Nevertheless, the cable concludes that "[i]n areas for example Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism results in tight limitations about the development of civil culture." This method is viewed as counter-productive through the official, who shows that the actual Ough.S. government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's human rights record as well as appeal to China's developing awareness which greater respect for individual rights, religious independence and the rule associated with law assists to promote the development and social balance that China looks for in addition to to enhance China's worldwide picture." This type of strategy might take considerable diplomatic abilities considering "China's weird fear the United States secretly encourages regime change and ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual cables offer insight into the daily business associated with diplomacy that's hardly ever afforded to everyone, which is interesting to notice the amount of work carried out behind closed doors upon Uyghur issues. The importance of the actual part of the United States like a monitor associated with Uyghur individual rights conditions within personal conversations is created obvious, and contrasts with its sensible public position. Employees from the Uyghur Human Privileges Task is actually comfortable with the pressure the Chinese government exerts upon Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the facts of Chinese language federal government pressure upon it's alternatives is actually illustrative from the degree which Chinese authorities attempt to control contrary stories. With increased facts in the future through Wikileaks, concerns more than Uyghurs may not grab the head lines, but the cables have get rid of new gentle on the paperwork of individual privileges conditions in the Uyghur area.

Uyghur People from East Turkistan

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the north-west part of China, the province of Xinjiang is a very least populated land whereas it covers near to a sixth with the nation's area. Getting resisted during hundreds of years the chinese control, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old Eastern Turkestan, fell into under the Chinese Han control in 1949. From then, its population is mostly Uyghurs and Turkish - speaking System.

Islamic above all, the Uyghurs have a very good religious identification that, in particular, permitted them to preserve a solid difference in opposition to the Chinese enemy. In fact, the Uyghur Kingdom of Mongolia knew a amazing civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their own history, the Uyghurs successively adopted Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., therefore starting the way to the Islamization of the complete Central Asia.

Under the influence of the beliefs which they adopted, the Uyghurs taken successively, and at times in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own unique graphic system.

Allah الله by Faleh Zahrawi فالح الزهراوي

The arrival of Islam was a great modification since it was followed by the assimilation of the Uyghur areas in the immense Turkic and Muslim Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used today.

If their writing, their language and their religion mark a real difference with the culture of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also differ from their aspect, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only nine million population - a trifle for this specific immense region. So, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been well known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular law allows them a few privileges in a country where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is recognized as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, looks pretty illusory. The presence of all-natural resources in Xinjiang, and its area with locations recognized as very sensitive, clearly encouraged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the greater responsibility jobs.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more freedom, but primarily the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in area Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur population continues today to proudly keep their identity and their tradition , although they become a minority on their own territory.

To get more detailed information and facts about Uyghur people, you can visit a Uyghur website called Uyghur News at http://www.uyghurnews.com

Making Money Cash

I know that memories are short on Wall Street. But are they short on Main Street too? Reading Linda Stern’s latest paean to leverage and housing risk, it certainly seems that way. Saving for a down payment is hard, she says. It can take time!

And that doesn’t seem to pay. If you think about the cost of paying rent for five or more years, you may be better off jumping into a home with a low down payment now. That’s true even if you have to spend more money on fees and mortgage insurance to get one of those low down payment loans.

Well, yes, let’s think about the cost of paying rent for five or more years. In fact, let’s plug all our numbers into a rent-vs-buy calculator and see where we’re at after five years. The problem with Linda’s formulation here is that it helps to reinforce the common fallacy that 100% of rent payments are “wasted,” in a way that mortgage payments are not. But that’s simply not true. In both cases you’re paying money every month for your shelter; in the rental case that money goes to the landlord, while in the ownership case it goes to the bank.

Some small part of your monthly payment may or may not end up helping you build equity in your home, if house prices move up rather than down and depending on how much of your payment goes towards principal. But remember that the alternative here is saving up for a down payment — which is essentially the same thing as building up equity in a future home. If you save up $250 per month for five years and then put down $15,000 as a down payment, then you immediately start off with $15,000 of equity in your home. By contrast, if you buy today with no money down and start making mortgage payments, there’s a good chance your equity will be much less than $15,000 in five years’ time.

But Linda’s on a roll here, and manages to come out with one of the most astonishing pieces of personal-finance advice I’ve seen since the crisis hit:

Even if you have the money for a bigger down payment, there can be good reasons to save your cash. Mortgage rates continue to skirt all-time lows: Why not put your money to work for yourself and borrow as much as you can reasonably afford, on a monthly basis, at today’s rates? You can put the money you’re not paying into a down payment to work elsewhere. If home values rise, you will have done your best to leverage a small down payment into bigger equity. If they fall, you’ll have less skin in the game, and that could put more pressure on your banker to improve your loan terms lest you walk away.

This, in a nutshell, is everything that was wrong with the housing market before the crash — everything that we want to avoid going forward. Can’t Linda look around at the current devastated state of many people who bought with little or no money down, and see the dangers here? Evidently not. Instead, she seems to think it’s a bright idea to borrow more money than you need, to the point at which you’re pushing the envelope of what you can reasonably afford. And then take the cash you’re not using for a down payment, and “put your money to work for yourself.”

I barely know where to start on this. Here’s one way of thinking about it: banks are not charities, and that they expect to make money from their loans. They have a cost of funds which is lower than the mortgage rate that you’re paying; the difference between the two rates is their profit. You, however, if you follow Linda’s advice, have a cost of funds which is your mortgage rate: if you wind up getting a lower return on your savings than you’re paying on your mortgage, you would have been better off just using the money for a down payment. Needless to say, if there was an easy way of getting a higher return on capital than the mortgage rate, the banks would have done it already, rather than lending you the money. And it’s pretty delusional, frankly, to think that you can invest better than say JP Morgan. Yes, there are tax benefits to having lots of mortgage-interest payments. But they’re not sufficient to make the difference here.

Here’s another way: let’s say you own your home outright. Would you take out a mortgage against 95% of your home’s present market value, and then invest that money in the market somehow, trying to “put it to work for yourself “? Of course not: you don’t have remotely that kind of risk appetite. Borrowing money against your house to invest in the market is, always, stupid. But that’s exactly what Linda’s proposing you do.

And here’s one more: shit happens. Sometimes, you end up needing money, in an emergency. If you’re already borrowing as much as you can reasonably afford, that’s a big problem. If you have a bit of fiscal breathing room, you’re much better off. If you end up in a situation where you’re in a position to put pressure on your banker to improve your loan terms lest you walk away, that’s not a good situation to be in. It means you’re broke. It’s something you want to avoid, whereas in Linda World it seems to be something to actively court.

Linda’s also convinced that house prices are going to rise: if you buy now rather than later, she writes, that means you’re buying “while housing prices are low.” That’s debatable — they still seem quite expensive, on some measures: the price-to-rent ratio, for instance, is still well above its historical average. And more generally, buying low doesn’t help you in the slightest if prices just continue to grind lower.

Linda’s conclusion is that “the less you put down, the better off you are.” Which is true so long as you keep on making all your mortgage payments without any problem, and nothing goes very wrong either with your personal economic situation or with the US economy as a whole. That’s the way that leverage works: it makes everything sunny, so long as things go right. And then it plunges you into misery when things go wrong.

The scariest part of Linda’s post, for me, is when she talks about how it’s a good idea to “do your best to leverage a small down payment into bigger equity.” It’s not the dollar amount of the equity she’s talking about here, it’s the leverage used to get there, and the higher the leverage the better off you are. Following that advice got us into our current mess. And taking it now is a recipe for disaster.
